Photos from Iceland – November and December 2023
My two week trip to the fascinating country of Iceland was taken at the end of November and December 2023. My journey brought me from the international Airport in Keflavik, into the capital city of Reykjavik, and then on a grand circumnavigation counter-clockwise sojourn around the island. My mode of transport: a small Volkswagen campervan. This turned out to made all the difference and provided me with an amazing amount of flexibility to explore and wander.
Bjarnarfoss: This 80m high waterfall with prominent basalt columns is located along the south coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
Jökulsárlón: A famous glacial bay located along the southern coat of Iceland. The bay sits directly below the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier outlet of the larger Vatnajökull Glacier – part of the Vatnajökull National Park ( https://www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is/ ). Vatnajökull is huge and occupies more than 7,700 square km – covering some 8% of the entire land mass of the country. The bay is filled with icebergs, water, wildlife (seals, birds, etc), and occationally a tourist who got too close to the edge. Be sure to try the fish and chips at the local food truck – amazing!
Diamond Beach: A black sand beach located at the ocean outlet of the Jökulsárlón bay. Iceburg fragments floating downstream from the glacier are washed up onto the shore… like gleaming diamonds. While a little busy (even in the winter), most of the crowds can be left behind with just a short walk down the beach.
